Purpose of the Role
This role is about more than service provision: it’s about building collective power to change the conditions that make people unsafe. Through recruitment, training, and deep relationship-building, the Safe Havens Community Organiser will help turn solidarity into a sustained movement that transforms how communities respond to racism, hate, and division.
You’ll use transformative community organising approaches — working with residents, institutions, and partners to develop leadership, action, and long-term sustainability.
What You Will Be Doing
1. Build Power and Relationships
- Recruit and train local businesses, community spaces, and faith groups to become Safe Havens.
- Conduct regular 1-2-1s with residents and community leaders to build trust, identify shared interests, and develop action plans.
- Attend and represent Safe Havens in local partnership meetings (with councils, police, and community organisations) to strengthen collaboration and raise visibility.
- Work with the Lead Organiser to develop a diverse Safe Havens Steering Group to enhance accountability, representation, and shared decision-making.
2. Develop Leaders and Actions
- Identify and nurture resident and organisational leaders, supporting them to act collectively for the common good.
- Work with the Residents Group to co-design and deliver anti-racist, community safety, and solidarity actions.
- Facilitate local assemblies, actions, and storytelling spaces that bring people together around shared goals.
- Collaborate with the Lead Organiser to develop trust and bridge divides through “Solidarity Socials”, launching in January 2026.
3. Deliver Transformative Training
- Deliver and co-design training on anti-racism, bystander intervention, and community safety.
- Facilitate workshops that blend political education, local experience, and practical organising tools.
- Support residents to co-facilitate and lead training as part of leadership development.
4. Develop Systems for Safety and Accountability
- Work with the Lead Organiser to design a community-led reporting and response strategy for hate and harassment.
- Strengthen data collection and evaluation methods to track incidents, outcomes, and learning.
5. Strengthen Sustainability
- Support Safe Havens to take ownership of the network model and develop local leadership.
- Promote the “pay-it-forward” approach, encouraging contributions to sustain future Havens.
- Help prepare impact reports and evaluation materials for funders and partners.
